The Monarch passed away yesterday afternoon at Balmoral after 70 years on the throne sparking mass tributes around the country and beyond.

And it has been announced today that all football games in both England and Scotland this weekend will be cancelled as a sign of respect as the country enters a period of mourning after her passing.

But the decision has divided opinion amongst fans with many already having forked out on travel arrangements to watch their respective teams up and down the country.

One player who was left annoyed by the decision was former Rangers attacker Josh Windass, who starred for the club for two years between 2016 and 2018.

The former Ibrox star took to social media to let his feelings at the decision be known, initially tweeting a stark reaction saying: “Baffling” just as the announcement was confirmed.

But he wasn’t done there as he continued to have it out with fans across the country who’d replied to his original post.

One Rangers fan who believes it was the correct decision to call the games off said: “It’s really not Josh! It’s respect.”

Windass pointed to fans who’d already forked out on arrangements for the weekend who will now miss out during a cost of living crisis.

He replied: “Thousands and thousands of people are now out of pocket cause of non refundable tickets and hotel bookings and many other things.

“The country is already on its knees.”

In another exchange, one fan reminded the former Ibrox star of the picture of Her Majesty that resided in the Rangers dressing room but Windass replied: “I respect the queen mate. Very much so.

“I don’t respect forcing people to sit at home and be sad and lose out on hard earned money. But that’s just my opinion.”

Windass‘ tweets were at the centre of debate with some fans agreeing and others in disagreement with his comments.

One fan said: “Less time tweeting, more time showing respect.

Another said: “It’s to show respect to a woman that did so much for our country.”

There was a large percentage of supporters who agreed with Windass comments though.

One said: “Matter of opinion, but I totally agree with you Josh.

“If you wanted to play, play. Our minds shouldn’t be made for us, the money I have forked out to go to Plymouth is extortionate.”

Another Sheffield Wednesdsay fan replied: “Agree, she loved sport, should have been played in her honour and every game should have ended on 96th minute.”

One Plymouth supporter added: “Guessing you lads are already in Plymouth or close by anyways, genuinely first time I’ve felt sorry for the away team/fans!”

The Sheffield Wednesday attacker continued to share his views online, later retweeting a post that said: “So this weeekend in the UK, shopping centres, theatres cinemas, cafes, pubs, gyms, rugby grounds and horce racing meets will all be open, but football stadiums won’t.

“Just let the absurdity of that sink in.”
